Muttley the Toymaker

Mark Uttley has worked professionally as an artist/toymaker for over 30 years and has been a member of the British Toymaker’s Guild for 20. He started making wooden toys and sculptures before he was in double figures. His ideas come from anywhere and anything, such as fairy tales, sayings, nature or his own imagination going for a wander. He likes to make quirky and colourful pieces. His principal material is wood which is often highly decorated using various paint techniques, which achieve the effect of animated illustrations. He often blends a multitude of other materials with wood.

In 2021 Mark took part in Channel 4’s Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas and he won the Toymaker’s competition.

Mark enjoys making interactive pieces for museums and has completed these for the Cutty Sark, Kensington Palace, which was celebrating the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birth, a cheese museum in Yorkshire and other museums around the country.

Mark is a designer and maker of the Good Grief Toy Set. This enables children to gothrough the process of loss through play.
