Jane Revitt

Map Cushions and Map Tea Towels are printed with beautiful details of contemporary and vintage maps. They are created by visual artist Jane Revitt.

Textiles have always been central to her work. After a degree Fine Art, she worked in the theatre for many years, specialising in creating sculptural costumes for IOU Theatre and other companies.

She has created artwork for public spaces such as hospitals, libraries and museums. There's often a theatrical twist to her work: Swoop, a large-scale artwork for a hilltop in Yorkshire features a flock of more than 500 enormous cut-out starlings, Banquet was a metal table and chair made for an ancient oak wood and Windblown Seeds featured a gust of seeds in the atrium of a hospital in Cornwall. 

Maps were first featured in The Poetry Lounge for London’s Royal Festival Hall where the A-Z map of central London was printed onto fabric and used to upholster two oversized armchairs. These Talking Chairs had speakers in the wings, enabling visitors to listen to poetry in the comfort of an armchair. Her chairs can be heard whispering stories, poems and memories in schools, theatres, museums and waiting rooms around the UK.

The first Map Cushions were made for her home town of Hebden Bridge to go alongside a large Map Chair featuring an Ordnance Survey map of the town.
